Curriculum: Post-Graduate Year III
PGY III

EDUCATIONAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The PGY-III year is focused on refining the resident's diagnostic and therapeutic skills and deepening her/his experience in a variety of outpatient treatment settings. In addition to treating individuals with severe and chronic mental illnesses, the PGY-III resident gains experience in treating individuals who are in life situation crises or have personality styles that cause them to function ineffectively in pursuing their life goals.

  • PGY-III resident makes the transition to the much more independent role of outpatient psychiatrist, working under attending supervision but with much less moment-to-moment supervision than during inpatient duties in the first two years.
  • S/he begins to develop a longer-term perspective on psychiatric disorders and their treatment, learning that accurate biopsychosocial assessment sometimes develops over time, and that the time-horizon for treatment response in chronic illnesses in the outpatient setting can be weeks to months as opposed to days in the inpatient setting.
  • S/he focuses more intently on improvements in social function and quality of life over time, rather than solely acute symptom reduction, as the goals of mental health treatment.
  • S/he becomes develops greater competence in psychotherapy, particularly state-of-the-art evidence-based, manual-guided psychotherapies (see Project IMPART Initiative on Manual-Guided Psychotherapies to Augment Residency Training).

  • S/he becomes familiar with the similarities and differences that arise in community vs. hospital-based settings.
  • S/he has the opportunity to take on a more extensive teaching role with medical students and more junior residents.
  • For residents enrolled in the Resident Pathways to Research, research project development begins.
