Curriculum: Clinical Rotations IV
Rotations PGY IV ADMINISTRATIVE CHIEF RESIDENCYLocation Educational ObjectivesThe Chief Resident position supports select PG-IV residents in developing advanced administrative and healthcare organizational skills, advanced teaching expertise, and professional leadership capabilities. Description of the RotationTwo PGY-IV residents are chosen by the Program Director with resident and faculty input to serve approximately half-time over 12 months. The Chief Residents share duties and work closely with the Program Director and Associate Director in a variety of capacities to oversee and coordinate HSS function; develop strategic and tactical program enhancements; monitor program performance; and take lead roles in teaching, mentorship, and resident recruitment and selection. Examples of current duties include participation in all joint faculty-resident committees, development of on-call policies and procedures, revision of resident and faculty evaluation processes, development of recruitment and selection procedures, selection of junior residents for HSS committee work, and organization of the resident retreat. The Chief Resident also takes a key mentorship role for junior residents, and leads the organization of several seminar courses including the Career Development Seminar, Grand Rounds, and the Journal Club. Expected CaseloadThirty-two residents, one Training Director, one Associate Training Director, two hard-working program staff, and the occasional stray faculty member.
SENIOR TEACHING RESIDENTLocation: Educational ObjectivesThe Senior Residency is a part-time rotation that allows the resident to gain experience in psychiatric administration, supervision, and seminar development and teaching of junior residents and medical students. Description of RotationThe Senior Teaching Resident supervises the PGY-I and PGY-II residents in the biopsychosocial evaluation, diagnosis, and management of all aspects of the patient's inpatient stay. S/he interacts with the treatment team in the management of patients and gain experience in the leadership of an interdisciplinary treatment team. S/he leads the treatment team rounds/meetings that involve the junior residents' cases, and supervises the junior residents in the follow-up of their cases until these patients are discharged. A key component of the Senior Resident rotation is participation in the education and training of the PGY-I and PGY-II residents under his/her supervision, including daily teaching rounds weekly inpatient journal club and quarterly clinical skills evaluation of PG-I and PG-II residents. The senior teaching resident also takes a leadership role in seminar-based teaching for all years and coordinates the Harvard Medical School Psych 700 course for the second year medical students. S/he also participates in the supervision of Boston University third year medical students. In AY 2008-2009 the Senior Teaching Resident co-leads a teaching seminar for the PG-IV residents, leads the summer session Knowledge-Based Review for all years, and co-leads the PG-I orientation seminar with the Associate Residency Director and participates in teaching seminars/workshops offered by Harvard Medical School.
Expected CaseloadThe Senior Teaching Resident inpatient supervision role includes oversight of the 8-10 patientsmanaged by the PGY-I and PGY-II residents under supervision of an attending psychiatrist. PGY IV Elective Rotations (Examples)HSS seeks to maximize elective time in the PGY-IV year to allow residents to build on their biopsychosocial, evidence-based training to develop specific areas of expertise and excellence.
