Goals and Objectives

Our goal is to develop the next generation of psychiatric leaders, well versed in biopsychosocial assessment and evidence-based care, both pharmacologic and psychosocial. HSS dedicates particular effort to providing opportunities for career development in research, teaching, and organizational leadership.

These goals and objectives are achieved through progressive clinical responsibility under close faculty supervision in a variety of healthcare systems. A particular advantage of HSS training is work with clinical populations that are multi-modally ill and often socially disadvantaged, providing the opportunity to develop clinical skills that prepare graduates for managing the most challenging patients throughout their careers.

HSS patient populations provide a particularly rich resource for those interested in serious mental illness, trauma and its effects, addictions, aging, and the medical-psychiatric interface.

Concurrently, a progressive, coordinated didactic program using primarily small group, seminar-based instruction is led by senior faculty with diverse clinical skills and academic interests. This didactic program provides the neurobiological and psychosocial bases for understanding clinical assessment and treatment, and lays the foundation for lifelong learning and professional development.
